#11 Zild - Homework Machine

Hi there! Greeting from Tokyo Japan. Welcome back to Sleepyhead news letter!

Do you know Philippine Rock Band IV of Spades? I am not sure how well they are know, recognized in Philippine, but as I assume from the fact that the huge number of the view of YouTube video, I would say IV of Spade seems to get the national recognition throughout Philippine. Their signature song “Mundo” get the 100 million views on YouTube, which is quite remarkable.
The band went on Japan Tour in 2020 before the outbreak of Coronavirus, and I watched the live shows, which was really amazing, impressive. It was impressive enough for me to take a video during the show even though I had a rule not to film the live show while the band performs on the stage.
Unfortunately, the band go on hiatus last year. The bassist, Zild Benites started his own solo-project and released a new album “Homework Machine”, which immediately became my favorite album in 2021. IV of Spades pursues the possibility of the authentic rock sound and mixes it up with the funky and pop element, which is the identity of the band. On the other hand, the solo-project was turned into synth-pop centered sound. The 1st album “Homework Machines” was picked up in “The 25 best Asian albums of 2020” by NME.
I suppose that it is a bit meaningless to bundle it as Asian Artist but it has a breaking power to come to surface of the indie scene. Looking back 40 years ago, Yellow Magic Orchestra wend out to the world and in current indie-rock scene all around the world, CHAI released their works from Sub Pop and reaches out to the broad range of rock / pop fans not only in Japan, but also any other areas in the world. I hope Zild would be recognized as the representative artist in Philippine and develop the music ground in the near future.
